Working on the principle of buoyancy, this trap effectively discharges condensate at temperatures close to steam temperatures, by distinguishing between the densities of steam and condensate.
The inverted bucket which in presence of steam remains buoyant thereby closing the valve and blocking steam sinks when filled with condensate opening the valve and letting out condensate under pressure along with trapped air and gases.
